When frustration attacks
Those of you who have Google Reader know the overwhelming feeling of seeing “All items (1000+)” when you log in.
Now, don’t think I’m irresponsible. I’m constantly reading the news while I’m logged onto my computer. So why do I always have so many unread items? Newspapers’ national news (a.k.a. politics) updates.
I spent SO LONG today going through my unread items in my other categories. I caught up on ALL the journalism and higher ed and state politics and etc feeds I subscribe to.
I got so frustrated about having so many unread items that I had to blog about it right before bed.
It’s not that I have so much to read or that there’s so much news; it’s that it’s not really news at all. I don’t really understand why I’m subscribing to the Washington Post, NY Times, USA Today, Miami Herald and more when it’s all just repetetive bullshit. I might as well just stick to USA Today because I’ll get all the same news that’s on every paper’s Web site, but I’ll get it several paragraphs shorter.
In conclusion, I’ve decided I need to really delve into more political blogs. Yes, I will still read the news from some newspapers, but I think this might be a better change for me (as someone who wants to be a political blogger when she grows up).
Any recommendations?

I was in the same boat, and just yesterday got rid of my Digg, Wired top stories and Overheard feeds. So, so nice to wake up in the morning and only have a few hundred or so items there.
As for political blogs, I cut myself down to Ben Smith at Politico, the CNN Political Ticker and Trailhead at Slate. That pretty much covered it all, and usually in an interesting way.

I use a Firefox extension called Sage which doesn’t lump all the feeds together — it shows you when each feed has been updated, and gives you the latest posts for that feed. So I read the ones that are most important for the time I have to spend.
In terms of political blogs, I like OpenLeft. I don’t always read the front page, but I always read QuickHits.

@Daniel: Thanks!
@Gavin: I’m guessing that’s a left-wing blog?
