You would be surprised how often I’ve counseled business owners in their love lives. As in… almost every single client. Why does a money mindset and business coach get so many questions on love?

Because our businesses do not exist in a vacuum.

Whether you’re an entrepreneur or in a traditional career, your success entirely depends on your state of mind. And if you’re struggling with the woes of dating in a pandemic or things seem off between you and your partner, it’s harder to show up in the empowered, abundant way you know you need to to land clients/customers or a that six-figure job.

None of us are taught how to manage love or money growing up and the wildest part is: We bring the same patterning into both.

Even something as simple as attachment styles translate into how you feel about and manage your money and business—and it’s not as cut-and-dried as you think.

For example, anxious attachment types tend to amass clutter because stuff takes on an emotional meaning, which also means they’re more likely to buy things to make themselves feel better and not check their bank accounts so they don’t feel guilty. Because anxious attachments have lower self-worth, they also tend to undercharge or offer discounts to land clients (and then wonder why they can’t seem to progress in their businesses or careers).

And avoidants? Well, these are the ones most prone to workaholism and becoming obsessive about money management in relationships. Money takes on a heightened meaning as it embodies security and becomes a replacement for emotional intimacy.

That’s exactly what I learned while I struggled with serial monogamy during my legal and journalism career and, later, balancing a healthy relationship with my own insecurity after transitioning to becoming a business owner.

As a serial monogamist, I realized that because my money felt out of control, I sought relationships to give me the stability I could never find. In my insecure mind, it was much easier to afford my expenses when I was only paying half than it was to find a job that would actually pay me what I was worth AND that I could love showing up to every day. It took going through a twin-flame breakup for me to get the memo that the only way I would find stability would be through curating my career and managing my finances like a baller.

It was no different when running my business. Whenever I felt out of control in money as an entrepreneur, my relationship took the hit as I tried to “fix” problems by turning small problems into big ones. If my relationship felt out of whack, I could expect a shit month in business. To fully succeed, I needed tools and support in BOTH areas of my life so I could build the stability in love and money that I craved.
